I was a BCBA and I ended up getting pregnant. I ended up having my daughter at twenty five weeks and we spent four months in the hospital. When we finally got home from the hospital, I was like, I cannot go back to work. I need to be able to have a flexible schedule, and I still want to be able to pour into the community that I love so much. That's when I decided to go independent and start my own consulting practice.
I started sharing my story on TikTok, because nobody was showing us how to go independent. I started getting a huge community on there, people asking questions and I'm responding and explaining things. I also uploaded videos of how I actually use ABA with my own daughter, especially verbal behavior. I just explain the science, make it easy, and also support everyone that's coming into the field with simple questions like, what is a BCBA? What is ABA? What is autism? How do you build rapport with a learner that is non vocal?
The field is growing so quickly. So while I'm working on my business, I educate them on business and also ABA. So that's how I merged into the dissemination side of things.

One of the things I wish everyone could take away from this is being OK with asking for help.
Be vulnerable your first year.. You're not going to know everything.
You think you're at your ceiling, but you're back to your floor, and it's a new ceiling that you're never going to accomplish because the field is evolving. You're evolving, and there's always something to learn. You're always going to be working with a new learner, with a new profile that's going to be different from everyone.
That's probably my biggest takeaway, being comfortable with asking for help and advocating for yourself.

My favorite thing is that I've been able to create a platform that really represents and resonates with me. I don't need to care about how I look, or if I misspelled anything on my captions. I can just show up for my community authentically, literally just show up, and be able to represent for the field and just inspire and empower others.
It's so cool to help people see their problems from a behavior analytic lens, and give them that little fire they need to believe in themselves. To help them advocate for themselves, and navigate their environment in a different way than they were doing, because now they have insight from a BCBA. Also, to foster that wisdom of understanding behavior and understanding what that learner might be experiencing.
